Condition update. Oh dear!

A few days ago we had a close look at the condition of the figurines and completed the condition reports.

Overall  we’ve discovered:

The figurines are made of clay with bamboo armatures and are quite heavy although they were hand shaped to be curved in at the back. They were painted using mainly six colours (black, white, red, brown, green and cream/pink) with some variation of shades. The paint has a shiny appearance (less so on the red pigment suggesting that less binder may have been used on red areas than the rest).

On the down side:

Some of the figurines are in a very poor state: breakages and resulting crumbling clay, fragile paint, but also old inattentive repairs using adhesives which yellowed over time, metal rods for armatures, printed cardboard for bases and large amounts of plaster which has not been appropriately shaped and left stains in many areas…
